Phase 2 Homes Charity Trip to AlabamaPosted by steve in charity work |

With the Carroll Street project wrapping up, I decided a good way to take a break after all our hard work would be to give something back to those in need. I was shocked to learn of how many homes in the South are still in need of serious repair 3 years after hurricane Katrina. Towards the end of October, I'm going to be travelling to Alabama (Bayou Le Batre - located in the far southern part of Alabama) to help a 78 year old grandmother who has a blue tarp for a roof. Hurricane Katrina spawned a tornado that sent a tree through the roof of this woman's home where she lives with her children and grandchildren. 3 years of having a tarp for a roof has lead to extensive damage to her home and with no money to fix it, they are living in a growing mess. I'm meeting up with a couple groups of people from Michigan (where I'm originally from) to rebuild this womans roof and remove the damaged material in the rest of the home so it can be replaced. During my trip, I plan on blogging about the situation there and how these people are living with hopes that it will generate more awareness of the bad situation that still exists in that part of the country.
